SAChE® Certificate Program - Chemical Reactivity Hazards

LIMITED TIME OFFER: Claim a 20% discount on eLearning courses with code ELEARN20.

Offer is valid from April 1-30. Credential programs excluded from promo.

Today’s chemical engineers must be able to spot potential hazards for uncontrolled chemical reactions. In this intermediate course, students will learn the various types of chemical reactivity hazards and study real-world examples of process safety incidents caused by uncontrolled reactions. Gaining an understanding of common situations where chemical hazards exist, students will learn how to avoid unintended reactions as well as how to control intended reactions. Students will discover how to use compatibility matrix applications and will be able to identify the correct methods to contain and control different types of reactivity hazards.

Learn more about the SAChE Certificate Program.

Unit 1:

  • Describe three major process safety incidents that were related to uncontrolled chemical reactions.
  • Define "chemical reactivity hazard" and recognize the various types of reactivity hazards

Unit 2:

  • Characterize the different ways by which uncontrolled chemical reactions can lead to process safety incidents
  • Identify locations or situations where chemical reactivity hazards may exist

Unit 3:

  • Use compatibility matrix applications to identify chemical incompatibility hazards
  • Match chemical reactivity hazards with measures used to contain, control and safeguard them

This intermediate course is for upper-level chemical engineering undergraduates who have had some exposure to process safety.

  • Unit 1 - Introduction to Chemical Reactivity Hazards
  • Unit 2 - Uncontrolled Chemical Reactions and Associated Hazard Locations/Situations
  • Unit 3 - Identifying Incompatibilities and Providing Controls and Safeguards
