SAChE® Certificate Program - Inherently Safer Design

Inherently Safer Design (ISD) takes a proactive approach to process safety, aiming to prevent hazards from entering manufacturing processes rather than merely manage them. Students who take this advanced course will come to understand ISD as a way of thinking rather than a specific tool. The course covers all aspects of ISD, from basic concepts and approaches to challenges in practical application.

Students will learn to evaluate hazard reduction and ISD principles as well as use the Management of Change (M-O-C) PSM element to incorporate and maintain ISD changes in proposed process changes. Last, students taking this course will acquire knowledge of which ISD approaches may be most effective at different stages of a process life cycle.

This course may be taken as part of the AIChE Credential for Sustainability Professionals (ACSP). More info

Unit 1

  • Define inherently safer design
  • Describe how ISD eliminates or reduces hazards to reduce the potential consequences of incidents
  • Identify ISD as a way of thinking as opposed to a specific tool
  • Define the safety strategies utilized in design
  • Define the various approaches to ISD
  • List advantages, disadvantages and practical challenges of applying ISD
  • Identify situations where ISD can be applied

Unit 2

  • Identify which process safety elements and techniques are most helpful in evaluating hazard reduction possibilities and the application of ISD principles
  • Evaluate the potential impact of human factors on ISD
  • Use the Management of Change (M-O-C) PSM element to evaluate opportunities for incorporating ISD concepts into proposed process changes and to prevent eliminating ISD features that already have been incorporated

Unit 3

  • Identify which ISD strategies may be most effective to apply at each stage of a process life cycle

This advanced course is for upper-level chemical engineering undergraduates who have had some exposure to process safety.

Students are encouraged to take the Level 2 (intermediate) courses first or become familiar with the subjects covered by the Level 2 courses by other means before taking this course.

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to Inherently Safer Design
  • Unit 2 – ISD Interaction with Process Safety Management (P-S-M) Systems
  • Unit 3 – Simplified Process Life Cycle-ISD interface
