This course provides chemical engineering students with a basic understanding of explosion hazards associated with materials commonly found in chemical processes.
After review of the course, the student should have an understanding of what questions to ask when participating in a process hazards analysis team to uncover the potential for explosions in their process.
Commonly used prevention and mitigation techniques are included.
Unit 1:
- Define the term "explosion"
- Provide examples of major industrial explosion incidents and describe their influence on how process safety is better managed today
Unit 2:
- Identify a potential explosion scenario by its category as either physical or chemical
- Identify the source of the explosion energy, given a potential explosion scenario
Unit 3:
- Define and describe potential hazards associated with explosions
Unit 4:
- Assess the relative explosion hazard of a material or mixture based on the physical characteristics
Unit 5:
- Ask pertinent questions regarding explosion prevention and protection techniques during the design of projects and periodic safety reviews of process systems
- Suggest potential methods of explosion prevention and protection based on commonly used approaches
- Locate common standards and guidelines on explosion prevention and protection
This intermediate course is for upper-level (junior or senior) chemical engineering undergraduates who have had some exposure to process safety. It may also be of interest to practicing chemical engineers in industry.
Those taking this course should already have an appreciation for fire hazards, and basic flammability. In particular, this course builds on content covered in ELA963 “Fire Hazards” and students are encouraged to take the “Fire Hazards” course or equivalent instruction through other means.
