This course is the first of two courses on "Practical Process Safety." It sets the stage for Course 2 by providing brief overviews of the process safety foundations, process safety elements (i.e., RBPS), and how process safety risks can be effectively managed. (Course 2 is ELA987.) The focus of these two courses is on the equipment life cycle, since unexpected equipment failures can lead to the loss of containment of hazardous materials and energies.  Significant incidents that have caused harm to people, the environment, and property resulted when the preventive and mitigative barriers of the process were not designed adequately or have failed.

The combined course goal is to help students understand what can happen if the entire life cycle of process equipment is not managed adequately, and especially that they need to work with other Subject Matter Experts if they are unfamiliar with other stages in the equipment life cycle.
