Inherently Safer Design (ISD) takes a proactive approach to process safety, aiming to prevent hazards from entering manufacturing processes rather than merely manage them. Students who take this advanced course will come to understand ISD as a way of thinking rather than a specific tool. The course covers all aspects of ISD, from basic concepts and approaches to challenges in practical application.
Students will learn to evaluate hazard reduction and ISD principles as well as use the Management of Change (M-O-C) PSM element to incorporate and maintain ISD changes in proposed process changes. Last, students taking this course will acquire knowledge of which ISD approaches may be most effective at different stages of a process life cycle.
This course may be taken as part of the AIChE Credential for Sustainability Professionals (ACSP). More info

Currently, he is President, WG Associates LLC. -providing consulting in technical Process Safety engineering and Process Safety Management. His past work experiences were with Dupont, Union Carbide, International Specialty Products and Ashland. He has been very active in both CCPS and the DIERS organizations and currently, he serves as a staff consultant for CCPS and is the Chair of the DIERS Program committee.

Dr. Robert E Young is currently an Associate Professor of Engineering Practice in the Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Material Science at the University of Southern California. Since joining USC full-time in 2016 (part-time from 2014 to 2016), Robert has taught the Chemical Engineering Process Control, Computer-Aided Design, Process Plant Design, and the Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Laboratory courses.
