Behavioral Aspects for Research Projects

AIChE's website is experiencing issues with Login, online registration, join, renew and other transactions. We are working to resolve the problem and apologize for the inconvenience.

Decision Making can be challenging for Research Projects. Research Projects face a lot of uncertainty and low probability of success. Several methods of managing Research Projects have been utilized by Industry, Academia and National Agencies. These Research Management methods are necessary but also induce a natural conflict between two sides of the Decision Making process; The Managers and the Researchers. The conflict that arises can reduce trust and result in strained relationships. Behavioral Economics can be used to understand why this conflict occurs and provide some options of reducing the conflicts. Conflicts in Research Project Decision Making can explain the “Innovators Dilemma” discussed by Clayton Christensen. Some of the options on avoiding the conflicts that result are: Role reversal for the stakeholders, working as a team with aligned incentives, awareness of unconscious biases and having an independent third party observe the interactions.
