Fourth CCPS China Conference on Process Safety Draws More Than 300 Attendees

June 29, 2016

The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and its Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS), together with the China University of Petroleum, hosted the 4th CCPS China Conference on Process Safety in Qingdao, China, on June 2 and 3. The conference attracted more than 300 participants representing the chemical process industries (CPI), academia, and government agencies in Asia and around the world.

The two-day conference included 28 technical presentations covering a spectrum of topics of interest to process safety practitioners, including new ideas in process safety, implementation of process safety technologies, incident investigation and lessons-sharing, risk analysis and risk reduction, mechanical integrity, and layer of protection analysis (LOPA). The event also featured 14 keynote speakers representing broad perspectives.

Louisa Nara, Technical Director of CCPS, set the stage for the conference with her keynote presentation entitled “Improving Efficiency and Effectiveness — Tools for Process Safety.” Nara reinforced the critical need to improve process safety practices in industries worldwide using risk-based approaches to process safety. She also discussed CCCP’s Process Safety Vision 20/20 objectives — which call for companies to develop a committed safety culture, vibrant safety management systems, disciplines adherence to safety standards, competency development among employees, and the sharing and application of lessons-learned.

Nara noted that 2016 marks the tenth year of partnership between CCPS and the China University of Petroleum, which has established the CCPS-China Section. Thanks in part to this collaboration, “the past decade has seen a steady increase in the interest and implementation of process safety tools and programs in China,” said Nara. “CCPS will continue to work with the China University of Petroleum, the China Chemical Safety Association (CCSA) and the State Administration on Worker Safety (SAWS) to improve process safety in this region.”

The CCPS China Conference on Process Safety is part of a portfolio of international CCPS conferences that promote process safety excellence in the chemical, petrochemical, and allied industries. Information about CCPS conference is available at www.aiche.org/ccps/resources/conferences.

About CCPS

CCPS is a not-for-profit corporate membership organization within AIChE, with over 180 members, that identifies and addresses process safety needs in the chemical, pharmaceutical and petroleum industries. CCPS brings together manufacturers, government agencies, consultants, academics and insurers to lead the way in improving process safety. Members, working in project subcommittees, define and develop useful, time-tested guidelines that have practical applications that run the gamut from human factors to qualitative and quantitative risk analysis to security vulnerability to inherently safety design. With more than 100 publications, CCPS is at the forefront of efforts to improve process safety performance. Information about CCPS and its projects is available at www.aiche.org/ccps.

About AIChE

AIChE is a professional society of 53,000 chemical engineers in 110 countries. Its members work in corporations, universities and government using their knowledge of chemical processes to develop safe and useful products for the benefit of society. Through its varied programs, AIChE continues to be a focal point for information exchange on the frontiers of chemical engineering research in such areas as energy, sustainability, biological and environmental engineering, nanotechnology and chemical plant safety and security.
