Safe Zone Ally Training workshops are interactive, research-informed workshops that seek to foster a more inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ individuals in STEM, through building participant knowledge and skills and creating a visible network of allies. Faculty, students, administrators, staff, and other professionals are welcome to participate in these workshops.
This Level 2 Safe Zone online workshop describes the concepts and implications of privilege and bias, discusses the climate for LGBTQ+ individuals in STEM and ways that allies can support LGBTQ+ students and colleagues, and explores techniques for creating inclusive classroom environments.
ASEE Safe Zone Ally Training workshops are supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) through Grant Nos. EEC-1539140 and EEC-1748499.
This webinar is presented in partnership with ASEE (American Society for Engineering Education) and as part of AIChE's Diversity & Inclusion initiative, which includes an initiative for LGBTQ+ Engineers and their allies.

Alon McCormick, PhD, has been a professor in the Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Dept. at the Univ. of Minnesota since 1989, where his research interests include the mechanisms and kinetics of various materials assembly and nano- and micro-structural processes. Dr. Alisha Sarang-Sieminski is an associate dean and an associate professor of bioengineering at Olin College. They have taken a winding career path, starting with a BS in chemical engineering from MIT, moving to a PhD in bioengineering from University of Pennsylvania followed by postdoctoral work in the Biological Engineering Division at MIT. They have been at Olin College since 2015, where their work has ranged from bioengineering teaching and research, to running a senior capstone program, to academic leadership.
