One of the ongoing challenges in conducting monthly safety training is making the lessons learned relevant and engaging for every attendee, from accounting clerks to shift supervisors. After several months of poorly received training sessions based on internal incidents, Ms. Laura Gimpelson noticed that incidents covered by the media were generating more discussion in break rooms and during lunch. Employees often asked her to explain the “findings” published in local news or released by federal agencies.
Recognizing this interest, she began using high-profile, media-covered incidents to highlight how similar risks could apply to plant operations or personal activities. Her approach demonstrates how to apply recommendations from these incidents to participants’ specific work environments, making safety training more relatable and impactful.
