Assessing Sustainability with Metrics and Methods

This presentation is about making an attempt to apply sustainability principles to engineering processes and products. Sustainability has been accepted as an organizing principle in most engineering disciplines. Industry and academia have also embraced the idea. Yet it is generally felt that not much progress has taken place in holistic assessment of products and processes. There have been many attempts and examples of applications. But they are generally not comprehensive.

This presentation first defines sustainability in comparative form and shows how one can proceed. Although the examples are from industrial activities, the method is general and can also be used to track the sustainability performance of a system over time or be applied to ecosystems.
