Engineers know how to produce safe drinking water, but transferring it to those in need is another story. In this webinar, Dr. Velegol discusses her experience developing a technology using the seeds of the Moringa oleifera tree to clean water. Hear her scientific results and lessons learned while discovering how even the best science must be balanced with an understanding of the social and cultural implications of technology. You will learn the barriers when applying water treatment technology to the developing world and be equipped with a broad list of questions to answer as you plan for a different future.

Take a look at your agenda:
  • The global water crisis and the role engineers play in solving it
  • Why the Moringa oleifera tree is at the center of efforts to provide clean water
  • Barriers to applying water treatment technologies to developing countries
  • Questions to ask before taking the next step

Stephanie Velegol

Over the past 6 years Stephanie Butler Velegol has worked with dozens on undergraduate students and a few graduate students at Penn State University to create a sustainable solution to the global clean water crisis using the seeds of the Moringa oleifer tree. Her work seeks to bridge the gap between science in the lab and application in places such as Rwanda, Nigeria, Morocco and Puerto Rico.  She has learned that even the best science must be balanced with an understanding of the cultural and social implications of the technology.
