The pulp and paper industry shares many common challenges with other parts of the chemical process industries such as the need for more efficient drying, separation and recovery of water, and more efficient heat exchange. Process intensification (PI), such as replacing thermally-driven separations like evaporation with non-thermal alternatives like membranes, is one example of how PI is being used in paper mills. Many of these intensified process technologies have broad applicability across the chemical processing industries (CPI).

Join speakers David Turpin (The Alliance for Pulp & Paper Technology Innovation), Chris Luettgen (Georgia Tech), and Paul  Yelvington (RAPID) for this 60-minute webinar which highlights the importance and potential impact that PI technology can make in the pulp and paper industry as well as other CPIs.

This webinar will cover:

  • A brief introduction to the pulp and paper industry and the importance of technology development, including process intensification, to the industry.
  • A case study highlighting the ongoing research project Robust Membranes for Black Liquor Concentration through RAPID, Georgia Tech and APPTI.
  • Outcomes from a recent RAPID workshop which gathered experts to discuss potential PI technology applications and areas of opportunity for the pulp and paper industry as well as other chemical processing industries.

David Turpin is the President & Executive Director of the Alliance for Pulp & Paper Technology Innovation. He has held this role since 2014. He worked for Mead and MeadWestvaco for 26 years with various roles in Corporate Engineering, Manufacturing, Information Technology and Research & Development. Paul Yelvington

Paul Yelvington is the Chief Technology Officer of the RAPID Manufacturing Institute. Prior to this role, Paul served as the Chief Chemical Engineer and Group Leader for Energy Conversion Technologies at Mainstream Engineering (MEC), where he led programs to develop several modular process technologies, including a portable fast-pyrolysis process for thermochemical biomass conversion to fuels, a hybrid hydrothermal liquefaction process for conversion of wet food wastes to fuels, and a biogas-tolerant engine-generator for agricultural waste digesters.
