Recent years have seen a reawakened interest in hydrogen fuel cell and water electrolyzer technology, with an important economical driver being the continuously lowered costs for intermittent renewal electricity generation from wind and solar. Modeling and simulation are important tools in the design and development of these electrochemical systems. Version 5.6 of COMSOL Multiphysics® introduces the new Fuel Cell & Electrolyzer Module. The new module brings tailor-made tools for modeling fuel cells and electrolyzers.

Attendees will be introduced to fuel cell and electrolyzer technologies and the modeling of these devices and processes using simulation software. By attending the webinar attendees will learn about:

  • Principal functionality of hydrogen fuel cells, water electrolyzers, and industrial electrolyzers
  • Benefits of using simulation for designing and optimizing electrochemical cells
  • Capabilities available in the COMSOL Multiphysics software for the modeling and simulation of fuel cells and electrolyzers
  • Process for modeling fuel cells and electrolyzers
  • Multiphysics modeling for including multiphase fluid flow, heat transfer, thermodynamics properties, and more
  • Investigation of fuel cell and electrolyzer performance at different operating conditions for different electrode configurations, membranes, separators/diaphragms, current collectors and feeders, materials, and chemistry

Presenter(s):

Henrik Ekström

Henrik Ekström is the technology manager for electrochemistry at COMSOL. Prior to joining COMSOL in 2010, Henrik worked at various fuel cell startup firms in Sweden. He received his PhD in chemical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.Read more
