The chemical process industry today faces tremendous challenges concerning materials and energy efficiency, environmental burden and operational safety. Market pressures and cost competitiveness of the developing economies provide an additional challenge that the chemical industry has to face in the coming years. Meeting all these challenges requires development of innovative equipment, novel processing methods and new chemistries that would drastically increase the efficiency of chemical and biochemical manufacturing. Process Intensification (PI) clearly addresses the above challenges and provides new technologies which make it possible to combine substantial increase in cost competitiveness with energy savings, improved safety and environment-friendly processing. It allows practical realization of the sustainable business goals both in existing and in new processes.

This 60-minute webinar, the first in a 10-part series, will sketch the background of Process Intensification. You’ll briefly review the history of PI and discuss its position in a broader context of chemical engineering science. Finally, you’ll focus on the fundamental approach to PI, which will be the guiding line of the entire series. That fundamental approach is based on four generic principles of Process Intensification and comprises four elementary domains: spatial, thermodynamic, functional and temporal. Each of those domains will be discussed in more detail in further parts of the series.

This webinar is part of a 10-part webinar series sponsored by the RAPID Manufacturing Institute. Webinars are free to RAPID Members. Click here for more information about the PI Webinar series and to register for additional webinars in this series.
