Education Division Webinar: General Strategy for Development of Teamwork Skills

The importance of developing teamwork skills for engineers is abundantly clear, but the means to do so can be prohibitive with regards to factors like cost or time.  In this webinar, we will share the details of how our activity is implemented and the impacts and benefits the research have highlighted.  Our activity is cost-effective, requires 1-3 hrs of classroom time, and highlights the importance of a variety of teamwork skills including skill diversity and intra-team communication.  In addition, due to its design, the activity is fun and serves as an effective ice-breaker to build up community among freshmen students.

Agenda:

  1. A “learn by doing” exercise in teamwork can be effective to initiate effective thinking about what good teamwork means.
  2. Repetitive reinforcement of effective teamwork can lead to improved learning gains by senior year.
  3. Using cooperative board games is an easy and low investment strategy to impact the teamwork skills of students.
