Description:

Numerous chemical absorbents and solid adsorbents are being developed for improved performance and reduced costs to capture CO2 from power plant flue gases or industrial plant effluents. Rigorous process simulation and development of all separation processes, absorption and adsorption included, starts with accurate correlation and reliable prediction of thermodynamic properties for multicomponent mixtures. This presentation reviews fundamental chemical thermodynamics and recent advances in applied thermodynamics as applied to CO2 capture process development. Recommended thermodynamic frameworks for CO2 capture with aqueous potassium carbonate solutions and CO2 capture with solid adsorbent zeolite 13X are presented and discussed.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Chau-Chyun Chen is a Horn Distinguished professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Jack Maddox Distinguished Chair in Sustainable Energy at the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering, Texas Tech University. A co-founder of Aspen Technology, Inc., he is the inventor of the electrolyte Nonrandom Two-Liquid (NRTL) activity coefficient model for electrolyte thermodynamics and the adsorption NRTL activity coefficient model for adsorption thermodynamics. His current research covers molecular thermodynamics and process simulation for CO2 capture, adsorptive and membrane- based separations, high salinity produced waters, and electrochemical systems. He holds over 160 peer-reviewed scientific publications and book chapters, and 20 US and international patents.
