In the recent years, Advanced Process Control has incorporated various new technologies and methodologies. One such advancement is Aspen DMC3 which has the features of Calibrate and Adaptive Modeling. Calibrate mode provides Automated Step testing for which a seed model is required. One of the ways to create a seed model is through step testing Manipulated Variables in a Dynamic process simulation and collect the data to build the model in DMC3. This approach has the advantage that no step-test is required in the real plant thus increased savings. This article explains this methodology of step testing and model building in DMC3. Advantages of this approach over traditional plant step test is also discussed
