Thermal Stability of Chemicals Based on Kinetics and Vessel Parameters Source: CCPS - Center for Chemical Process Safety Type: Conference PresentationConference Type: AIChE Spring Meeting and Global Congress on Process Safety Presentation Date: March 21, 2010 Duration: 30 minutes Skill Level: Intermediate PDHs: 0.50 Share This Post: Thermal stability of a chemical mixture or pure material can be evaluated using adiabatic calorimetry. Several calorimetry testing instruments and techniques will be used and compared for a comprehensive evaluation. Results from these tests can be used to determine kinetic parameters which can be used to determine the self accelerating decomposition temperature (SADT) as well as time to maximum rate calculations for a temperature range. SADT values for several organic peroxides based on shipping containers and storage vessels are evaluated to illustrate the effect of vessel size. Both solid and liquid reactive conditions are considered.
