8th International Conference on Microbiome Engineering | AIChE

The theme of the 2025 International Conference on Microbiome Engineering is microbiome engineering across different environments. The conference will cover topics ranging from the human gut, skin, vagina, as well as animal systems, marine ecosystems, and soil. Over three days, we will have six sessions, each focusing on different approaches to microbiome engineering.

Abstract Submission Deadline: September 1, 2025

Transforming microbiome science into practical solutions for pressing issues in nutrition, healthcare, and agriculture benefits from an engineering-driven approach. At ICME, we are cultivating a dynamic community of microbiome engineers committed to translating the latest science into real-world impact.
Johan E.T. van Hylckama Vlieg, Cofounder and CSO Freya Biosciences

The microbiome field is at a tipping point. After more than 2 decades of foundational work, we are beginning to see signs of a new phase of real-world impact across health, agriculture, and environmental systems. This is why ICME is such an interesting meeting to me. I like this conference because it doesn’t just showcase emerging technologies for a single field, it connects them across disciplines. In my opinion, this is where the next wave of innovation and solutions will be shaped.
Ruben Vázquez Uribe, Research scientist and Head of fermentations, VIB-KU Leuven Center for Microbiology

Session Topics

Reasons to Attend

  • The conference offers a comprehensive approach to the field of microbiome engineering
  • Attendees can expect not only a broad survey of the tools necessary for accurate and precise control of microbiomes but also an extensive overview of applications enabled by this toolset
  • You’ll be exposed to the latest developments in microbiome engineering from leading experts
  • Opportunities to connect with a unique community that thrives on crosstalk between academia and industry
  • Network for collaborations and recruitment
As a microbial ecologist, it’s been incredible to witness the different shifts in the field from exploration to understanding, and now to engineering. With the ICME Congress bringing together microbiome scientists with a wide range of interests, it’s an exciting moment to connect microbiology and ecology with cutting-edge engineering approaches across ecosystems and health.
