Dr. James Marsh leads a research group in the Department of Microbiome Science at the Max Planck Institute for Biology in Tübingen, Germany. As a specialist in microbiomes, human-associated pathogens, and molecular genetics, Dr. Marsh is dedicated to advancing our functional understanding of microbial communities. His team integrates high-throughput genomics, anaerobic culturing, synthetic biology, and bioinformatics to develop innovative genetic manipulation techniques for non-model microbes. This capability enables them to probe the underlying mechanisms that govern microbe-microbe and microbe-host interactions to address fundamental questions in microbial community ecology.
Dr. Marsh received dual bachelor's degrees in Microbiology and Business Management from Queensland University of Technology and earned his Ph.D. in Microbiology in 2015, also from Queensland University of Technology. Prior to his current appointment, he served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen and at The ithree institute at the University of Technology Sydney.
