Navigating Hydrogen Safely: Risks, Best Practices, and Resources for Success
This class addresses critical safety considerations of using gaseous hydrogen as an energy source, including its benefits and associated risks. It highlights common hazards like leaks, invisible flames, and explosions, emphasizing the need for special handling. Key safety strategies—such as ventilation, leak detection, and emergency shutdown systems—are discussed alongside lessons learned from past incidents. The class also outlines relevant regulations and best practices, and points to the valuable safety resources offered by the Center for Hydrogen Safety (CHS) to help the industry build a strong safety culture.
Course credits: Earn 2 PDHs or 0.2 CEUs.
Process Safety Management for Hydrogen Systems
Process safety management principles can improve the safety and efficiency of hydrogen operations of any size. Explore the 20 elements of the CCPS Risk Based Process Safety (RBPS) management system as they apply to hydrogen projects. Develop confidence in the relationship between RBPS and compliance requirements. Identify the value of the Center for Hydrogen Safety Planning Guidance as a communication tool. Learn how the RBPS system scales to meet your needs, how to get started and references to keep you going. Process Safety is for everyone handling hydrogen, not just the big chemical companies or just the sites with storage larger than 5 tons. Don't let quantity thresholds define your approach to safety!
Comprehensive Explosion Science
This course provides an in-depth exploration of gas explosions, focusing on hydrogen. It covers causes, escalation factors, and mitigation strategies, including ventilation, reduced confinement, and congestion removal. All types of hydrogen explosions—flash fires, BLEVE, deflagrations, and detonations—are discussed.
Assuming a basic understanding of hydrogen, the course delves into advanced explosion science, aiming to equip you with practical design strategies to help prevent and mitigate hydrogen explosions in your facility.
Course credits: Earn 4 PDHs or 0.4 CEUs.
