Gaseous Hydrogen: Recognizing Risks and Applying Safety Measures (2 hours)

8:30 - 10:30 AM

Instructors: Nick Barilo, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) & Center for Hydrogen Safety (CHS) and Danielle Murphy, WHA International & Hydrogen Safety Panel

This session provides a comprehensive overview of hydrogen safety, tailored for professionals involved in hydrogen-related projects, emergency response, or regulatory oversight. Participants will explore hydrogen’s properties, potential hazards, and common incident scenarios. The course emphasizes critical safety practices in system design, leak detection, ventilation, and emergency shutdown procedures. Real-world case studies and hazard analysis techniques are used to highlight the importance of proper planning and response. Attendees will also be introduced to key resources from the Center for Hydrogen Safety and tools like H2Tools.org to support ongoing safe hydrogen deployment and operations.

Course credits: Earn 2 PDHs or 0.2 CEUs.

Vent System Design (2 hours)

11:00 AM -1:00 PM

Instructor(s) Steve Foster, Swagelok

Course credits: Earn 2 PDHs or 0.2 CEUs.

This interactive session offers a practical, fundamentals-based overview of key standards, codes, and industry best practices for hydrogen vent systems. Participants will learn how to identify potential risks and uncover opportunities for improving the design, operation, and management of these critical systems.

Comprehensive Explosion Science (4 hours)

2:00 - 6:00 PM

Instructor: Derek Cross, GexCon Australia

This course provides an in-depth exploration of gas explosions, focusing on hydrogen. It covers causes, escalation factors, and mitigation strategies, including ventilation, reduced confinement, and congestion removal. All types of hydrogen explosions—flash fires, BLEVE, deflagrations, and detonations—are discussed.

Assuming a basic understanding of hydrogen, the course delves into advanced explosion science, aiming to equip you with practical design strategies to help prevent and mitigate hydrogen explosions in your facility.

Course credits: Earn 4 PDHs or 0.4 CEUs.
