One warm summer evening in Boston, Jinrong Wu, an engineer from China, attended a dinner with some colleagues from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It was his first trip to the U.S., and he ordered a dish he’d never eaten before — lobster.

Carbon fibers are generally less than 10 μm in diameter, and they have high mechanical strength and stiffness, as well as high chemical and temperature tolerance. They are also very lightweight, which makes them ideal for wearable electronics and applications in the aerospace and automotive industries.

While studying the influence of magnesium ions on the crystallization of amorphous calcium carbonate (CaCO3), a team of researchers at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (MPIKG) in Germany stumbled across a new crystalline structure of the mineral.

Ammonia was proposed as a fuel during the late 19th century — in New Orleans, it was used to power streetcars. In the 1940s, ammonia fueled bus engines and other transportation in Belgium during World War II.

Expectant mothers must be vigilant about what they put in their bodies — for example, they must be careful to avoid raw fish, which can contain high levels of mercury, and cigarettes and alcohol, which are loaded with harmful chemicals.

Most people perceive concrete as a solid, nearly indestructible material. Although it supports buildings and bridges across the world, concrete has its weaknesses.
