Diabetes mellitus (DM) has become a worldwide epidemic — studies estimate that by 2035, approximately 592 million people will be affected. The disease can occur when the pancreas produces very little to no insulin, which can elevate glucose levels in blood. Patients must carefully monitor blood glucose levels to ensure they do not get too high.

Chemists at the Ohio State Univ. (OSU) have developed designer molecules with the potential to trap harmful insecticides, pesticides, and even fatal nerve agents such as sarin gas in the environment as well as in the human body.

Ophthalmic drugs in the form of eye drops and ointments are used to treat eye infections, glaucoma, allergies, and even migraines. Treatment through the eyes is difficult, and in most cases, less than 5% of the administered drug is effectively absorbed.

The report also evaluates research needs and technical barriers for utilization, which transform carbon dioxide into resources with potential profit.
