Professional Integrity: Best Practices for Publishing Your Work Workshop

November 16, 2014

The workshop “Professional Integrity: Best Practices for Publishing Your Work” will be held  on Sunday, November 16, 2014 from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, co-located with this year’s AIChE Annual meeting in Atlanta, GA. The goal of the project is to develop, field-test, and widely disseminate a set of teaching modules focused on building graduate student skills in publication ethics.

Attendance at this workshop is free

SBE has partnered with the American Physiological Society on this NSF funded project related to ethics in biological publishing. The workshop modules incorporate relevant and current knowledge of and appreciation for the facts and principles of the most common publication ethics issues, as well as the tools needed to integrate and apply the guidelines to actual situations using professional standards of practice. Education materials were developed last year and the modules were pilot tested in January 2014 by APS with SBE engagement.

The workshop will feature distinguished instructors from industry and academia, who will lead three plenary sessions, each followed by a small group discussion, on the following topics: Conflict of Interest, Overlapping Publications, Data Fraud and Fabrication. This course is designed to promote a better understanding of how to prepare a manuscript for publication with professional integrity. Attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Work directly with highly experienced instructors to learn how to address three common issues that arise during the preparation of their manuscripts.
  • Join in discussions and activities that focus on best practices for preparing their work for publication.
  • Network with professionals, faculty and students
  • Provide constructive feedback about the course to help APS/SBE revise and improve the presentation materials.
