Toxics Use Reduction Planning Helps Companies Stay Ahead

Large quantity users of toxic chemicals in Massachusetts are required not only to report on associated annual emissions, but also to pay close attention to their uses of toxic chemicals. These companies must go through a systematic planning process to identify and prioritize activities that will allow them to reduce or eliminate their use of toxics. Companies find that doing so helps them to not only stay ahead of regulations or chemical restrictions but also to stay competitive in a global market. Pam Eliason, Senior Associate Director at the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) will describe the Toxics Use Reduction Act program and share best practices companies have developed over the past 30+ years of its existence. Pam will share examples of company successes in eliminating use of various toxic chemicals, from halogenated solvents to PFAS, and will put this practice into the larger context of the global movement of alternatives assessments.
Pam Eliason is the Training Manager and Senior Associate Director at the Toxics Use Reduction Institute at UMass Lowell. Pam is excited to bring information about toxics use reduction planning, innovative technologies and the science of safer chemicals and practices to businesses, agencies and community groups in Massachusetts and beyond. She leads TURI's training program, which provides certification training and continuous education opportunities for TUR and safer alternatives practitioners. She was an invited instructor of the University of Washington’s Green Chemistry and Chemical Stewardship Certificate Program, teaching about Assessment Tools for Safer Chemical Decisions.
