Annemarie Purmer is Sr Director Global QHSE for Nel Hydrogen Fueling since Sept 2021. In that role she is responsible for defining the key strategies for quality and safety risk management, quality and safety assurance for hydrogen refueling stations. Further responsibilities include codes and standards development, as well as compliance with such regulations codes and standards. In this role Annemarie is steering compliance, quality and HSE teams in three regions; Denmark, US and Korea.

Prior to this role Annemarie was Hydrogen Process Safety Manager since 2020 for Shell Hydrogen New Energies. She was leading safety risk management, assessing and defining the key strategies for codes and standards development both internally to Shell as well as externally. While, ensuring safety and cost effectiveness. In addition, she is a subject matter expert in safeguarding. Annemarie has set up a new safety department within Shell, implementation pragmatic HSSE management system and HSSE standards and protocols for Shell New Energies hydrogen business. Ensuring effective Process Technical Safety and risk management for hydrogen refueling installations, hydrogen transport and hydrogen fuel production.

Before joining the hydrogen business, she spent 10 years within Shell as technologist gathering operational experience via supporting refinery units and subsequently in various process safety and engineering roles until 2016 and becoming Hydrogen Safety manager.

Annemarie Purmer has a M. Sc. degree in Chemical Engineering from Twente University one of the leading engineering universities from the Netherlands. Annemarie is married to Rick Winkelman, with whom she lives in Oegstgeest, the Netherlands, together with their three children, Carlijn (13), Friso (11) and Iris (9).

Recognized authority on Hydrogen Safety, representing Shell in various industry bodies, as

1)    Vice Chair Center for Hydrogen Safety Executive Committee  May 2022 – ongoing

2)    Co-Chair Hydrogen Council Safety PT april 2019 – april 2021

3)    Developing ISO 19880-1 and contributing to Codes & Standards bodies like ISO, HSSE, and industry and government collaborative efforts.

Contributing to safety in hydrogen refuelling and major projects; e.g. Shell Rotterdam electrolyzer project.
