ChemEs Must Sound the Alarm on Plastics
Dear Editor,
Thanks for your comments in the Dec. 2020 issue editorial (“Waste Not, Want Not,” p. 3) regarding single-use plastics and the potential risk that too much focus on single-use plastics may distract the public from other higher-priority concerns, such as climate change.
As chemical engineers, if we know the history of our field, we may be aware of the many risks chemistry has introduced to innocent people. One of the things that comes to mind is the whole host of chemicals that we eventually learned were carcinogens, such as benzene. One of the consequences of our field is the many harmful chemicals that have been created — you may have even worked with some before we knew of the hazards...
