Should I Py or Should I Fortran? (a place for Fortran and Python in science and engineering)

9:00pm to 10:00pm

Virtual / Online

Fortran and Python are programming languages with substantially different histories, design principles, and target applications. Yet, they are often found (and used) together in the toolbox of a scientific software developer. In this talk, a high-level overview of these two languages and their library ecosystems in the context of scientific and engineering applications will be given. The pros and cons of their design principles, built-in data structures, and parallel processing capabilities, and what all this means for your work, today, will be discussed. Finally, some opinionated advice on how to best use Fortran and Python to get the results you need will be offered.

Milan Curcic is a meteorologist and oceanographer. Programming Fortran since 2006 and Python since 2010, he has worked with teams from US Navy and NASA on developing and improving Earth system prediction models. Milan currently does research on ocean waves in hurricane conditions at the University of Miami. He's also working on a startup (Cloudrun, Inc.) to bring numerical weather prediction to the compute cloud. Milan is working with Manning Publications on a book called Modern Fortran: Building Efficient Parallel Applications, to be published in Fall 2019.
