Higher Goals, Lower Emissions: Recharging the Chemical Industry

Presented by Robert Kumpf

Wednesday, May 24, 2023, 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm EDT

This presentation will review the complicated subject often referred to – incorrectly – as “industry decarbonization.”  General, economy-wide analyses of GHG emissions inevitably list petrochemicals as a “hard to abate” sector. The industry produces products in volumes that are measured in millions of metric tons and the processes to produce those millions of metric tons are very energy intensive.  And of course, inputs today are almost exclusively based on fossil hydrocarbons. If that were not challenging enough - petrochemicals is a growth sector. Due to population growth and increasing GDP/capita, chemical demand will grow.  There are no scenarios that envision “peak chemical demand,” no de-materialization. The paper will further consider a portfolio of GHG abatement technologies and the current state of industry efforts to reduce Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions in their products and processes.

Robert J Kumpf is a Ph.D. Materials Chemist and Petrochemicals & Specialty Materials executive with 35 years of experience across multiple geographies and functions. Bob has received over 20 US and international patents and has published in refereed scientific and management journals. Before joining Deloitte, Bob spent 29 years in the chemical and materials sector, starting as a research scientists and then advancing to C-level roles in large and small companies. He is currently a member of the Penn State Material Science Department External Advisory Board. He is active in ACS, ACC, AIChE, and AFPM industry and professional associations. Dr. Robert J. Kumpf received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Materials Science from Penn State University and completed the Oxford University Business Economics Program.
