The VLS is honored to have Dennis Baranik (COO) and Dr. Heather Byrne (Research Director) of Carbonxt, a startup producer of advanced activated carbons for environmental separations. They will discuss the innovation, leadership, and passion required to start a technical enterprise. The talk will include whether entrepreneurship is right for you, how to get started, and avoiding common pitfalls of entrepreneurship.
Dr. Byrne leads the Research and Development efforts at Carbonxt, including solutions development, sorbent advancement, and product testing. She specializes in the areas of mercury removal strategies and sorbent development. Prior to joining Carbonxt, Heather worked as an environmental engineer in the fields of aquatic toxicology and industrial phosphate fertilizer production. Heather is a graduate of the University of Florida where she earned a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering.
Baranik joined Carbonxt in 2014 and is responsible for the overall operations of the company. Prior to joining Carbonxt, he held executive positions in strategy, marketing, business development and finance for various companies in the automotive, marketing, consulting and investment industries. He has extensive experience both with Fortune 100 corporations in addition to start up entities, and from a funding perspective has been involved with raising capital for new ventures along with investing in pre-commercialization companies. Dennis is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Business/Economics and an MBA with concentrations in Finance and Marketing.
