“ARDEC Gun Propulsion Development”

Scheduled Speaker:

Thelma G. Manning, PhD, P.E.

Research Chemical Engineer – Picatinny Arsenal

It has always been the goal of American gun propellant investigators to develop propellant formulations using energetic ingredients currently produced in the Unites States, to achieve improved ballistic performance and improved insensitive munitions properties. However, if these requirements are not achievable with currently manufactured ingredients, new energetic ingredients are explored and evaluated. This presentation will cover an overview of gun propellant development, characterization and ballistic testing.

Dr. Manning serves as an expert and recognized authority on the development of gun charges and cartridges, and is also an expert in the development of new propellants and their processing methods. She also serves as a reviewer of
numerous propellants and engineering journals, and proceedings series. She is the recipient of 14 patents, and has authored / co-authored approximately 70 published papers. Currently serving as a Director of the North Jersey Section, AIChE; Dr. Manning holds a BSChE (University of Santo Tomas, Philippines), MSChE (Polytechnic Institute of NY), and PhD in Materials Science and Engineering (NJ Institute of Technology).
