The human body has an incredible capacity to regenerate itself from minor injuries, but more serious conditions require medical intervention to promote proper healing. Biomaterials and tissue engineering hold a great deal of promise to enhance regeneration and to eventually provide solutions for conditions that we are currently unable to effectively treat. The Shreiber Laboratory at Rutgers University has a history of engineering collagen based biomaterials for neural tissue engineering. This landscape served as a jumping off point for Chris’ thesis research, which has now included forays into peripheral nerve regeneration, 3D printing of dermal grafts, traumatic brain injury, and development of a drug delivery platform with the potential to treat countless injuries or disease states. In this talk Chris will provide a brief tour of his thesis research and illustrate how a young chemical engineer can apply their training to address complex problems in the world of medicine.

Chris Lowe is currently a Graduate Research Fellow at Rutgers University in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, carrying out his PhD thesis research in the laboratories of Dr. David I. Shreiber. His work has been supported by the New Jersey Commission on Brain Injury Research (NJCBIR) and he is a trainee in the Rutgers Biotechnology Training Program. Chris holds a B.S in Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, both from University of Mass., Amherst. Chris has been a heavily involved as a volunteer leader with AIChE at both the local and national level for the last nine years. Upon completing his PhD research Chris will be seeking opportunities in biologics process development in the pharmaceutical industry.
