The Process Safety Division’s Idea Exchange Committee is excited to launch the fourth installment of our virtual book club, your drop‑in forum for lively and practical conversations around the latest thinking in process safety and human‑centered operations.

Cal Newport

In this eye-opening account, Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that "follow your passion" is good advice.  Not only is the cliché flawed-preexisting passions are rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work-but it can also be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping.

After making his case against passion, Newport sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving what they do. Spending time with organic farmers, venture capitalists, screenwriters, freelance computer programmers, and others who admitted to deriving great satisfaction from their work, Newport uncovers the strategies they used and the pitfalls they avoided in developing their compelling careers.

 

How the Book Club Works

• Read at your own pace; we will focus on themes, not chapter summaries.

• 60‑minute recurring virtual meet‑ups:

  • Second and fourth Thursdays in June, July and August. 

  • 11:30 am -12:30 pm Central 

• Flexible attendance; join any session that fits your schedule.

• Open discussion with no recording; frank conversation encouraged. Key takeaways will be posted afterward on the PSD Book Club page.
