Annual S&H Division Meeting | AIChE

Annual S&H Division Meeting

Monday, May 16, 2022,
2:00pm to 4:00pm
CDT
Virtual / Online

Greetings AIChE Safety and Health Division members.

It was great to see many of you in San Antonio for the Global Congress on Process Safety.  As you may know, we had a successful conference, including the Loss Prevention Symposium, Process Plant Safety Symposium, and Process Safety Management Mentoring Forum, all organized through the S&H Division.  At our booth in the exhibitor area we greeted attendees throughout the conference and discussed the S&H Division, all of our ongoing activities, and the benefits of membership.  We also gave away 5 free membership to lucky winners.  We also held a very lively S&H Division Cocktail Reception, with members enjoying being able to meet in-person again, and talking and enjoying the evening together long after the event was scheduled to end.  However, because of the ever evolving pandemic, we were unable to hold the Annual Meeting and the Annual Safety and Health Division Dinner that we normally hold onsite in conjunction with the GCPS.  So, we will be having a virtual meeting on Monday, May 16th from 3-5pm EDT to cover what we would have at these events.  We invite you, and hope that you’ll be able to attend.

An importance part of the S&H Division Dinner each year is presentation of the Walton Miller Award.  The Safety and Health Division’s prestigious Walton Miller Award is essentially a lifetime achievement award in process safety.  Walt Frank, the winner of the Walton Miller Award this year, was presented with an award plaque at the beginning of the GCPS Case Histories session, having the broadest possible audience for recognition of Walt Frank as the award winner.  In the upcoming S&H Division virtual meeting, Walt Frank will share his perspectives on process safety from his personal experiences and career.  Please join us in the meeting in congratulating Walt, and listen to his interesting experiences.

We normally also have a guest speaker at the dinner, and are pleased to announce guest speakers for the May 16 virtual meeting:

Darya Minovi and Darius Sivin will present their work on protecting the public from hazardous chemical releases worsened by natural disasters.  This work is highlighted in a July 2021 report, Preventing “Double Disasters”.  You can find the full report at http://progressivereform.org/our-work/energy-environment/preventing-double-disasters/. As a preview, here is an excerpt from the reports summary, “It’s past time to address “double disasters” — hazardous chemical releases by industrial facilities that are worsened by inadequate action in the face of conditions of climate change and natural disasters. As the global climate crisis intensifies, coastal and inland communities are increasingly at risk of natural disasters. When industrial facilities in these communities fail to adequately prepare for extreme storms, wildfires, earthquakes, heat waves, floods, rising sea levels, and other natural disasters, hazardous chemicals stored onsite can ignite, explode, and there may be dangerous and even catastrophic releases that threaten the health and safety of workers and the public. This can lead to a cascading series of harms, including toxic chemical exposures, on top of the effects of the storm itself.”

Darya Minovi, MPH, is a Senior Policy Analyst at the Center for Progressive Reform. She is a public health advocate passionate about environmental justice and the use of research to inform policies that protect human health and safeguard the environment. In her role at CPR, she works to assess the impacts of under- and unregulated pollution on communities, particularly in the face of the worsening climate crisis. Darya received her Master of Public Health in Environmental Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and her Bachelor of Science from the College of William & Mary.

Dr. Darius Sivin is a public health scientist and policy expert focusing on chemical hazards, indoor and outdoor air pollution, ergonomics, nanotechnology and infectious diseases. He is Editor in Chief of NEW SOLUTIONS: A Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health Policy and has extensive experience leading the training of workers and working with government, academia, nonprofits, and unions to help ensure working environments are safe and allow people to enjoy healthy, long, productive lives.  Sivin obtained his Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health in 2002. He received a Master of Environmental Studies in 1994 from The Evergreen State College and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago in 1990.
