The hazards of a process, such as the inherent reactivity, flammability, and toxicity of the materials used in the process, must be evaluated and mitigated to an acceptable level. Hazard identification and risk analysis (HIRA) provides a structured approach for this purpose. This course builds upon the fundamentals covered in ELA974 - Hazards and Risk: Introduction to Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis and provides a deeper understanding of the HAZOP method introduced in that course. This course will provide guidance on selecting HAZOP nodes, the preparation required to conduct a HAZOP, roles and responsibilities of HAZOP team members, and how to document the outcomes of a HAZOP. Different HAZOP methods and techniques are presented and their applicability is discussed. A brief introduction to quantitative risk analysis methods is included as these methods are often required to determine the required risk reduction measures needed to meet an acceptable risk target.
