James (Jim) VanOmmeren, CFSP, is a Process Safety Consultant at the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS), a Technology Alliance in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). He has nearly 30 years of process safety experience in a 40 year career at Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. He retired from Air Products as a Senior Process Safety Engineering Associate and his roles included senior process safety support and oversight of new technologies and major global engineering projects; developing global engineering safety policies, standards, and work processes; and being the Global Functional Owner for worldwide engineering. His experience includes industrial, specialty, and electronics gases, chemicals, and equipment; alternative energy opportunities; flammable gas and gasification facilities; and air separation technologies. He has participated in authoring several CCPS books, authored many articles relating to Process Safety, given presentations at global symposiums, and holds eight patents dealing with gas and cryogenic processing. Jim is also a Process Safety Consultant for Engineurs and EMD Electronics companies. He received his BSChE from University of Delaware, is a member of various Compressed Gas Association (CGA) subcommittees, is a Certified Functional Safety Professional (CFSP), and was awarded the Distinguished Engineer title.
