Chem-E-Car Competition® Rules

Updated Rules for the 2015 Annual Chem-E-Car Competition® are now available.

As part of AIChE's commitment to safety in industry and laboratory environments, student teams and their advisors will be asked to demonstrate a commitment to safety awareness, safety planning, and safe practices as a standard component of their participation. All teams are required to carefully read and review all Chem-E-Car Competition® documents to fully understand the requirements to safely compete at an AIChE Chem-E-Car Competition®.

New Rules 2015

Please note the following change from 2014: Maximum Operating Pressure. This is the highest pressure within the vessel during normal operation. For initial design purposes the maximum operating pressure can be estimated from the stoichiometry — but the actual pressure must still be measured once the car is operational. For example, a proposed reaction, when operating the car with its heaviest load (500 grams water) and longest distance (100 ft), can develop more than 200 psig, assuming complete reaction. If the MAWP is known for the vessel, the maximum operating pressure must always be below the MAWP. As a rule of thumb the maximum operating pressure should be no greater than 90% of the MAWP. No vehicle is permitted to have a pressure greater than 500 psig.

Note: Be sure to complete the Chem-E-Car Safety Training and Test before your Regional Conference. Participants must complete the safety tests within the year that the competition takes place, i.e. those competing in the 2015 Regional Conference competitions must complete the test in 2015.
