New topical conferences emphasizing the need for new chemical engineering contributions to solve emergent challenges — along with the need for new and diverse perspectives, aptitudes, and skills to achieve those ambitious goals — will be in the spotlight at the first Virtual AIChE Annual Meeting. Originally scheduled to take place in San Francisco, CA, Nov. 15–20, the 2020 Annual Meeting will be hosted online Nov. 16–20. The associated Annual Student Conference will take place online Nov. 13–16.

The Virtual Annual Meeting is the latest and largest of the online meetings that AIChE has conducted this year, and builds upon the successes and insights gained from the recent 2020 Virtual Spring Meeting and 16th Global Congress on Process Safety (GCPS). Held Aug. 17–21, that meeting attracted and engaged large audiences at its sessions and activities, including lively interaction in discussion rooms and virtual networking events. Online attendance at daily keynotes, plenaries, and other featured events approximated that of previous in-person events, with the kick-off AIChE Government and Industry Leaders (AGILE) Award keynote address by Bhavesh V. (Bob) Patel, CEO of LyondellBasell, on Aug. 17 drawing nearly 1,000 viewers.

The Annual Meeting organizers and programmers are adapting the meeting’s full slate of technical sessions, lectures, plenaries, poster sessions, and networking events for online presentation. Among the benefits afforded by the virtual meeting platform, and in addition to the increased access to meeting content for those who might otherwise be unable to travel to the meeting, the entire contents of the technical program will be recorded and can be streamed and revisited for one month after the meeting. Registrants can consume all the sessions at their convenience. Full meeting registration will include permanent access to recordings of select presentations as part of the conference proceedings.

Meeting registration is open, and AIChE has reduced fees to reflect the virtual format. AIChE has also relaxed its cancellation policy for previously registered attendees who cannot attend the virtual event...
