December 2020 STS-AIChE Chair’s Letter – Mark Harkness

Hello South Texas Section,

I hope this finds you all well and safe. My year as Chair is about to wrap up, As I close, I want to express my thanks for a successful year. Redirecting to an online community has been a challenge that was well met by all.

We had a great monthly meeting in November, as well as a launch of our virtual networking meetings. We have tentatively scheduled to be online-only through May, and I think with the recent good news on vaccines, a restart of face-to-face meetings in September looks promising. We have no events scheduled in December.

I want to thank our 2020 Executive Committee and Volunteer Leaders. Tom Rehm, our Past Chair has been a pleasure to work with. Thank you, Tom, for providing me guidance and a sounding board throughout the year. We still need to have that billiards rematch.

Thank you to our other Executive Committee members: Ramanan Krishnamoorti, Chair Elect, Yurika Diaz Bialowas, Treasurer, Joseph Hernandez, Secretary, Babak Rafienia, Position 1 Chair, Nabila Shamim, Position 2 Chair, Meghan Spivak, Position 3 Chair, William Pittman, Position 4 Chair, and Matt Kolodney, Institute Liaison.

In addition to our nine 2019 Executive Committee Members, we have several others who deserve recognition. The South Texas Section cannot operate successfully without you: Tom Menn, John Middleton, Emily Jackson, Lucas Von Ruff, Carol Schmidt, Dale Embry, Alan Rossiter, Ian Glasgow, Talia Sanchez, Connor Schonert, Vic Edwards, Mickey Reeves, Dave Silarski, Dennis Griffith, Kanjakha Pal, Sundar Viswanathan, and Adam Bialowas. I know I have forgotten someone, but to All I say, Thank You!

I also would also like to say Congratulations again to our new officers for 2021:

Chair-Elect – Julie White

Position 1, Education – Mahdi Nouri

Position 3, Communications – Romina Myrtaj

Finally, I want to thank all our speakers and sponsors. We appreciate your support.

To All, Happy Holidays, be safe, and I look forward to seeing you in person sometime next year!
