SIOC/Fellows Program for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI)

AIChE has initiated a major effort in EDI for inclusion and intentional representation of people from diverse backgrounds in Chemical Engineering (See the full AIChE Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Statement)

A working group (WG) from SIOC and the Fellows Council (FC) has been established to lead activities, events, and communications to AIChE members, especially to engage Fellows with their stature, experience, and wisdom.

“The group’s major objective is to develop a proposal for SIOC/Fellows collaborations that will make optimal use of the talents, experience, and institutional memory of the Fellows. The collaborations should be action oriented, advance the mission as stated in the Institute’s diversity and inclusion statement, and have the potential to enhance the integration of Fellows’ contributions throughout the Institute.”

From several meetings of the WG, coordination of WG with the FC has developed an activity at the virtual Fellows Gathering in August. AIChE President-Elect, Deb Grubbe, will give an introduction. The participants will be placed in one of four (4) Zoom groups according to their preference, each facilitated by a SIOC representative from the SIOC committee associated with a particular underrepresented group (MAC, WIC, DORIC, LGBTQ+) and a Fellow or member of this Working Group. The objective of the exercise will be to:

• Familiarize Fellows with the current working climate for underrepresented colleagues

• Familiarize Fellows with ED&I initiatives throughout the Institute

• Engage Fellows and encourage and gauge their interest in ED&I endeavors

• Solicit ideas and suggestions for ED&I activities
