Export infrastructure must grow with chemicals, says CPChem exec

Another wave of chemical capacity is expected to come online over the next few years, and the nation's export infrastructure, including ports, must ramp up now to meet that demand, says Chevron Phillips Chemical executive Bob Rhoades. Eight steam crackers and 13 polyethylene facilities are expected to begin operations in the US between 2017 and 2019.

EU OKs new targets for renewables, 2nd-gen biofuels

The European Parliament has approved a revised Renewable Energy Directive, confirming new targets for renewables, second-generation biofuels and energy efficiency. The directive will require renewables to account for 32% or more of the EU's gross final energy consumption and second-generation biofuels to provide 14% or more of transportation fuel by 2030.

Chemical Safety Board faces political threat

President Donald Trump has attempted to eliminate the Chemical Safety Board in two successive budget requests but has been unsuccessful. Despite a Democrat-controlled House of Representatives, the president may achieve his goal by opting to not nominate board members to replace those whose terms are ending, thus not meeting a quorum.

What does the next Congress have in store for chemicals?

With Democrats assuming control of the House of Representatives in January, observers are divided on how much the shift will affect federal chemical policy.
