Barry reduces Gulf offshore oil, gas production

Tropical Storm Barry forced operators in the US Gulf of Mexico to curtail roughly 73%, or 1.38 million barrels, of daily oil output and 62% of natural gas production, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said Sunday. Evacuations were put in place for 283 of the region's 669 manned platforms.

Surging US chemical investments cast positive outlook for industry

Demand for ethylene and access to low-cost feedstocks continue to drive chemical investments in the US, as seen by new projects in the pipeline from Chevron Phillips Chemical and Qatar Petroleum; Exxon Mobil and SABIC; and Ineos, writes Marissa Luck. Some analysts say ample feedstocks will help the US Gulf Coast avoid the demand and pricing slump seen in other parts of the world.

Researchers unveil new strategy to turn glucose into biofuels

Scientists from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology used a one-step direct fermentative process to produce microbial diesel fuel from glucose and oleaginous microorganisms. The strategy demonstrated the highest efficiency in producing biofuels and fatty acids ever reported, according to a press release.

June crude oil exports reach 3.3M barrels per day

The American Petroleum Institute reported US crude oil exports hit 3.3 million barrels per day in June, a record level. Total petroleum exports for June were 8.4 million barrels per day.

US Gulf oil production down nearly a fifth

Tropical Storm Barry shut down 19% of US oil production and natural gas output in the Gulf of Mexico -- roughly the daily equivalent of 335,000 oil barrels and 519 million cubic feet of natural gas.

Attorneys general request overruling on oil train restrictions

The North Dakota and Montana attorneys general have filed a request to overrule restrictions imposed on oil trains. The restrictions require reduced volatile gas amounts on trains traveling within Washington state.

US to become top LNG exporter within 5 years, IEA says

The International Energy Agency believes that the US will overtake Australia and Qatar in 2024 to become the world's top liquefied natural gas exporter with annual export volumes exceeding 3.53 trillion cubic feet. Meanwhile, US LNG production is seen accounting for roughly 23% of global LNG output by 2024.

Hydrogen could be the oil industry's answer to climate change

Thanks to its lower-carbon footprint compared with natural gas, hydrogen could provide an opportunity for oil and gas companies to accelerate their transition to a greener future as well as help them compete with renewables. Equinor and Royal Dutch Shell are among the oil majors actively exploring ways to convert gas into hydrogen and use it to fuel power plants, heat dwellings and other applications
