Work on Shell Chemical's plant in Appalachia is underway

Shell Chemical Appalachia is building a petrochemical plant in Potter Township, Pa., and more than 100 cranes can be seen from the construction site. The plant is part of what's been billed a "petrochemical Appalachian Renaissance."

Long-term outlook for chemicals is good, says Deloitte exec

Trade concerns and a projected global surplus of ethylene are challenges for the global chemical sector, but the outlook appears brighter for the US Gulf Coast because of low-cost feedstocks, according to this analysis. Barry reduces Gulf offshore oil, gas production

Tropical Storm Barry forced operators in the US Gulf of Mexico to curtail roughly 73%, or 1.38 million barrels, of daily oil output and 62% of natural gas production, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said Sunday. Evacuations were put in place for 283 of the region's 669 manned platforms.

Storm, flooding lead refineries to cut half of Gulf Coast's oil output

Tropical Storm Barry has forced the evacuation of 200 offshore facilities, halting over 1 million barrels per day of production, or about 53% of the Gulf's output. Concerns of flooding have also shuttered a coastal refinery.

Oil companies look at other energy investments

While European oil companies have invested in electrification, US majors have focused on other sustainability measures. Occidental has stakes in carbon-capture technology investment, while ExxonMobil has been looking toward biofuels.

Gulf of Mexico operators evacuate platforms over storm threat

Chevron, BP and Royal Dutch Shell are evacuating personnel from many of their deepwater platforms in the US Gulf of Mexico and are shutting down oil and natural gas output in preparation of a weather disturbance that may strengthen. At least 13 offshore facilities operated by the three companies are affected by the evacuations.
