Simple molecules, design essential for chemical circular economy

Chemical companies can ensure their products are suited for the circular economy by avoiding complex molecules, designing products with recyclability in mind and avoiding components that are difficult to separate and break down, according to a study from Klaus Kummerer, James Clark and Vania Zuin. "The chemistry necessary for a CE will come to fruition only through a new attitude toward chemistry education, chemical research and engineering, and product design," they write.

Va. lawmakers consider offshore drilling, fracking ban

A pair of bills that would prohibit offshore drilling and hydraulic fracturing in much of eastern Virginia cleared the state's Senate Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources on Tuesday. The measures still need approval by the full Senate, the House and the governor.

EIA: Peak US oil production still a ways off

US oil production will hit 14 million barrels per day by 2022, after which annual growth will slow to less than 400,000 bpd, causing output in the Lower 48 states to peak at 13.84 million bpd in 2032, according to the Energy Information Administration. The agency expects Alaska oil production to max out at 910,000 bpd in 2041, nearly double current levels, while output in the US Gulf of Mexico is seen hitting a 2.4-million-bpd record in 2026.
