EIA forecasts slower shale oil, gas production growth in Feb.
Shale oil and natural gas production will increase by roughly 22,000 barrels per day and less than 100 million cubic feet per day, respectively, in February, the slowest rates of growth since early 2019, according to the Energy Information Administration. The Permian Basin will continue to drive the gains and set new production records for both oil and gas output.
Energy industry leaders highlight carbon capture's importance
Oil and natural gas companies recognize carbon capture's role in combating climate change and, encouraged by investors, are using the technology to curb emissions, Occidental Petroleum CEO Vicki Hollub said on a panel in Davos. Oxy is building the largest direct air capture facility in the Permian Basin, Hollub said, adding that "if we can perfect direct air capture, then we can use it anywhere."
Scientists develop low-cost approach to biofuel production
A low-cost technique that uses an ammonia salt-based solvent to produce biofuels from plant fibers has been developed by scientists whose report was published in Green Chemistry. "Our pretreatment system can slash -- by up to 50-fold -- the use of enzymes to turn solvent-treated cellulose ... into glucose (a sugar) used to make bioproducts like ethanol," said lead author Shishir Chundawat.
