US refining activity seen slowing this year
The Energy Information Administration expects US refiners to process a gross 17 million barrels per day on average this year, down from 17.3 million bpd in 2018, in what would mark the first annual decline in 10 years. However, an anticipated jump in refining capacity and utilization will likely push refinery runs to 17.6 million bpd in 2020.
Keystone XL gets court nod for alternate route
The Nebraska Supreme Court on Friday upheld the state Public Service Commission's approval of an alternative route for TC Energy's Keystone XL pipeline, removing a major obstacle to the project. However, the pipeline is still the center of another lawsuit in Montana and continues to face fierce opposition from environmentalists.
US energy dealmaking surged in July
The US oil and natural gas sector recorded 44 mergers and acquisitions worth $9.89 billion combined in July, accounting for 51.1% of global energy deal value for the month, according to GlobalData. The figures represent a 54.5% increase from June and a 58.8% decline over the 12-month average of $23.98 billion
More than $159 million bid in Gulf of Mexico lease auction
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management's latest Gulf of Mexico oil and natural gas lease sale pulled in $159.4 million worth of high bids on 835,006 of the 77.9 million acres made available. Equinor and BP placed the most bids at 23 and 21 respectively, while BHP Group offered the largest bid for a block at $22.5 million.
2018 was a record year for US oil, gas production
The US saw its petroleum and natural gas production grow by 16% and 12% respectively in 2018, marking the largest-ever absolute increases from a single country, according to the Energy Information Administration. US petroleum output climbed to a record 28.7 quadrillion British thermal units last year, while gas production soared to an all-time high of 28.5 billion cubic feet per day.
EIA: US LNG export facilities received record gas volumes in July
A record 6 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas -- or about 7% of total US dry gas production -- flowed to US liquefied natural gas facilities in July, according to data from OPIS PointLogic Energy. Gas deliveries by pipelines to Mexico and to LNG export terminals climbed to 10.9 Bcf/d in July and averaged 10 Bcf/d from January through July, an increase of 30% over the same period of 2018, the Energy Information Administration said.
