Research laboratories in academic institutions have similar responsi­bilities to those of the broader chemical industry — to create and maintain a safe working environment for their employees, students, faculty, and staff. This article will review the divergence in approach to safety between academia and industry, and share the perspectives of the authors in their journey of continuous improvement in laboratory safety practices at the Univ. of Virginia.

Peter Meinhold

Dr. Peter Meinhold is an industrial biotech and agtech entrepreneur and currently serves as CTO of Provivi, Inc. Originally from Germany, Peter moved to the U.S. to pursue a Ph.D. in biochemistry in the research group of Prof Frances Arnold at Caltech.
