Accelerating Decarbonization: Challenges and Opportunities

Accelerating decarbonization will take a combined technological and regulatory framework that continues to promote the health, safety, and well-being of society. While the regulatory framework in the U.S. remains elusive and can at times be polarizing, the technological sea change that is necessary represents an enormous opportunity for engineers and scientists.

The industrial sector will continue to represent the most challenging area to decarbonize for the foreseeable future. Net-zero-carbon heat sources, electric heat, net-zero-carbon fuels, and heat management technologies are viable research and development (R&D) pathways that can be explored. However, engineers and scientists should also be engaged in developing a viable regulatory framework for a decarbonized future so that a reasonable result can be achieved that benefits society.
