LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Engineering [Workshop & Panel]

This session will include a presentation and a panel on how to best attract, engage and include LGBTQ+ engineers into your workplace, department or classroom. Strategies will be given for allies of the LGBTQ+ community to better support their colleagues and influence the overall climate. Topics include basic LGBTQ+ terminology, managing bias and microaggressions, introduction of intersectionality and more. The panel features perspectives and experiences from leaders in industry and academia.

The workshop and panel will be followed by a special reception for LGBTQ+ members and their allies in the same room.

3:30 - 4:45 - Workshop & Training on Being a Better Ally of LGBTQ+ Engineers 

The workshop is for allies and LGBTQ+ to discuss and engage in learning more about the current engineering culture, including understanding terminology, unconscious bias and microaggressions. Strategies will be shared to create a more inclusive classroom or workplace. It will be run by:

• Stephanie Farrell, Experiential Engineering Education, Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ and
• Anthony Edward Butterfield, Chemical Engineering, University of Utah.

4:45 - 5:55 - Panel of Leaders Discuss Their Experiences with LGBTQ+ Inclusion

This panel will explore real experiences of LGBTQ+ inclusion in industry and academia over the years. The panel includes:

• Jim Fitterling, Chief Executive Officer, The Dow Chemical Company and Chief Operating Officer, DowDuPont Materials Science Division;
• Deborah Grubbe, Owner and President of Operations and Safety Solutions;
• Eric Reiner, professor at University of California, Berkeley
